"Residents of Bellmore, Merrick and several neighboring communities pay the highest water rates on Long Island, according to their Nassau County legislator, and they're facing a 12 percent rate hike from the private water company that serves the area.
Nassau Legis. Dave Denenberg (D-Merrick) was joined by Legis. David Mejias (D-Farmingdale) and other civic leaders Thursday outside the North Bellmore Fire Department - which said that, in addition, it pays the water company five times what neighboring East Meadow Fire District pays for rental and maintenance of fire hydrants.
